A Brief History

A brief history of Carbide International’s (CIPL) involvement and development of prolonged life of agricultural ground engaging tools.

CIPL had for many years supplied wear resistant products to many industries experiencing acute wear problems on metallic components. These included mining, oil and gas, cement, quarrying, chemical processing etc. At this time, no serious work had been offered to decrease wear on agricultural points.

In 1989 the company carried out various types and methods of application of abrasive resistant materials on the, then untreated, pressed and cast steel points used in agriculture.

By the mid 90’s protection of agricultural points with Tungsten Carbide had become well known and an accepted economic necessity by most farmers. So the potential market was huge. At this stage, many points manufacturers realised that they had to market their own points with Tungsten Carbide protection – that number has since grown enormously.

Efficient as our stick and wire electrode coating process was in the field, the application of the material is labour intensive. As a result, the points manufacturers sought ways to reduce this application time. Working with these manufacturers, we then offered Sintered Tungsten Carbide tiles as a solution. Although the tiles have to be brazed or silver-soldered onto a flat clean (bright) surface, the application speed is high. Originally these were “hand” brazed but most high production manufacturers now induction braze, using brazing shim cut to the right size for the particular tile. This has now become the “norm” within the agricultural sector.

Many different types and shapes of NoTill points are now on the market. CIPL have been intimately involved in the developments right from the start and, in Australia, are able to offer the largest range of tiles sizes from stock at the lowest prices and of the best quality.

Our tiles are flat, straight and are “ready to braze.” Any required sizes that are not in stock can be supplied in 4-5 weeks.

We also stock silver-solder shim and Tungsten Carbide grit in a range of mesh sizes.

We have many years experience in this field and welcome any enquiries from manufacturers or farmers.
